Airflow and a sealed system Especially at low speeds, the cooling fan is needed to pull air through the radiator. The fan clutch engages it only when necessary, which saves fuel. In addition, the system must be completely sealed. A properly working radiator cap maintains pressure, while the right seals and a sealing plug prevent leaks.
